MEDIANEWS TO HELP ROLL OUT ONLINE CAR-SHOPPING SERVICE.

Computer users in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  soon will be able to shop for cars online through a new service, following a tentative agreement by the Daily News' parent, MediaNews Group Not to be confused with Media General, an unrelated newspaper and TV group.
MediaNews Group, based in Denver, Colorado, is one of the largest newspaper companies in the United States.
, with Banc One Credit Co. and Navidec Inc., officials announced Wednesday.

The companies have signed a letter of intent to launch Wheels, an online automotive shopping service, in Los Angeles, San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  and York, Pa., later this year. Those locations will bring the total number of Wheels sites to eight nationwide.

``We are excited about our partnership with MediaNews, which shows that our successful strategy of securing media partners in regions across the country continues to rapidly move forward,'' said Ralph Arnijo, chief executive officer and president of Navidec.

Based in the Denver suburb of Englewood, Navidec is a leading national provider of Web-based products.

MediaNews Group operates 40 daily and 150 weekly newspapers, including the Daily News and four other dailies in the L.A. area, as well as newspapers in the San Francisco-Oakland area and in York.

``We searched the nation for the right online automotive sales product. After a thorough review, we believe Navidec has the best in the business,'' said Daily News Publisher Ike Massey.

Wheels will allow computer users to obtain information on thousands of new and used vehicles from their local auto dealers. Active Wheels sites now feature 11,888 vehicles from 92 different automotive dealer franchises. Altogether, those sites have generated more than 4,000 sales leads and more than 1 million page views.

To promote the online shopping service, MediaNews will run ad campaigns in the three regions. In Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , the Daily News, which last year led the nation in full-run auto advertising, will kick off the promotion.
