MEDIA STUDENT CREATES "VIRTUAL UNDERGROUND" WEBSITE.

A 21-year-old media student has created an innovative new website which allows companies all over the world to promote their business activities by purchasing a station on a virtual Underground map.

The Virtual Underground - www.thevirtualunderground.com provides links from the stations to companies' websites and can be purchased for a period of 3, 6 or 12 months.

Since its launch in Spring 2006, the site has attracted over 135 companies and individuals and receives up to 10,000 hits per day.

Tom Herriott, the site's designer, explains why he thinks the idea works so well: "Internet advertising Delivering ads to Internet users via Web sites, e-mail, ad-supported software and Internet-enabled cellphones. Also called an "ad network," Internet advertising organizations act as a middleman between the advertiser and the Web sites and software publishers that display the ads.  is nothing new but the Virtual Underground allows businesses to advertise in a more unique and personal way. People may choose their particular station because their business is located there, or they live there, or perhaps because it is the most focal point focal point

As well as being fun and unique in its field, the map isn't over crowded so it's very easy to navigate around.

Stations are selling out fast and it won't be long before all 305 stations are sold as well as prime location the River Thames The River Thame (pronounced as "tame") is a river in southern England. It is now considered a tributary of the larger and better-known River Thames and should not be confused with it by the similarity of names.  which will also be up for grabs. Tom is due to expand his website to feature other maps from around the world such as the recently introduced New York New York, state, United States
