MEDAMICUS RECEIVES FDA MARKET APPROVAL

MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- MedAmicus, Inc. (NASDAQ: MEDM) announced today it has received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration to market its fiber optic physiological pressure transducer system.
The company stated that its transducer will initially be marketed for use in urology and uro-gynecology applications including the diagnosis of incontinence and other urological related dysfunctions. This Food and Drug Administration marketing clearance permits the company to proceed immediately with clinical evaluations. According to Gene Champeau, vice-president of marketing, clinical evaluations are scheduled in several major medical centers and are designed to collect clinical performance information that will support future sales and marketing for the product.
The company currently anticipates full marketing of the product to commence in the third quarter of 1993.
Champeau stated that the transducer, with additional development, may be utilized in the measurement of other physiological pressures including the areas of neurology, obstetrics, cardiovascular and pulmonary medicine. The existing U.S. market potential for pressure measurement in these applications is in excess of five hundred million dollars annually.
Dennis Madison, vice president of research and development for the company, who is responsible for the development of the transducer, stated that the primary focus of the design team was to utilize a technology that would provide a smaller, more accurate, more convenient and cost competitive product as compared with existing fluid filled systems in use today. Fiber optics was the key technology which made this possible.
MedAmicus, Inc. is a Plymouth, Minn.-based medical products company engaged in the design, development, manufacture and marketing of disposable vascular access and pressure monitoring devices.
