Jean Nouvel has been awarded the RIBA's Royal Gold Medal The Royal Gold Medal for architecture is awarded annually by the Royal Institute of British Architects on behalf of the British monarch, in recognition of an individual's or group's substantial contribution to international architecture. , the oldest architectural award in the world. RIBA RIBA Royal Institute of British Architects President Marco Goldschmied called him 'an exemplar in the very best tradition of European innovation and adventure'. Nouvel is architect of the cultural and conference centre in Lucerne Lucerne (l sûrn`), Ger. Luzern (ltsĕrn`), canton (1993 pop. , Switzerland (AR October 1998) as well as numerous projects in his native France. He is now working in Mexico and the US as well as Europe. Last year's medal winner was Frank Gehry.
