MECA's Cullen Trust for the Performing Arts Concert Series Presents The Kailas String Quartet.


HOUSTON -- On Friday, January 27, 2006, MECA's Cullen Trust for the Performing Arts Concert Series presents The Kailas String Quartet. Members of the famed quartet include Jory Fankuchen on violin, Stephanie Fong on violin, John T. Posadas on viola and Emmanuelle Beaulieu Bergeron on cello. Alejandro Vela, MECA artist in residence, will accompany the quartet on piano. The concert will feature the Shostakovich Piano Quintet and other chamber and solo works by Haydn and Liszt.

The KAILAS STRING QUARTET (pronounced ki-lis) first met and performed at the Tanglewood Music Center The Tanglewood Music Center is an annual summer music academy in Lenox, Massachusetts in which emerging professional musicians participate in performances, master classes and workshops designed to provide an intense training and networking experience.  in 2003. With the support of their mentors, including former members of the Concord and Cleveland Quartets, they officially formed the following summer. The group was recently granted the graduate quartet residency at the Shepherd School of Music The Shepherd School of Music is located in Houston, Texas on the campus of Rice University, Texas' most selective institute of higher education. Among the schools within the university, the Shepherd School is the most selective, accepting overall about twelve percent of all  at Rice University.

The Kailas Quartet brings together musicians from very diverse backgrounds and leading music schools and conservatories. The members have attended the Juilliard School, the Juilliard School, The (jl`yärd), in New York City; school of music, drama, and dance; coeducational; est.  New England Conservatory of Music New England Conservatory of Music, at Boston, Mass.; coeducational; est. 1867, chartered and opened 1870. It is closely associated with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood. , the San Francisco Conservatory, the Shepherd School of Music, the Cleveland Institute of Music The Cleveland Institute of Music is one of the nation's leading independent music conservatories. It is located in the University Circle district of Cleveland, Ohio, United States and is overseen by president David Cerone and Catherine Jarjisian, interim dean. , the Oberlin Conservatory, and the Montreal Conservatory of Music. Members of the Kailas Quartet have also performed at the Tanglewood, Yellow Barn, Kneisel Hall, Manchester, and Mendocino Music Festivals, while collaborating in chamber music performances with Donald Weilerstein, Robert Mann, Menahem Pressler, Joseph Silverstein, Sergiu Luca, Bonnie Hampton, and Gilbert Kalish, among others.

Alejandro Vela was born in Piedras Negras, Mexico in 1976, and began his piano studies under his mother, Hortencia Vela vela

A few years later he moved to Houston to attend the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA for short) is a secondary school located at 4001 Stanford Street in the Montrose district of Houston, Texas. The school is a part of the Houston Independent School District. . His teachers included the late Robert Avalon, former MECA Artist in Residence and Artistic Director of Foundation of Modern Music, and Yoheved Kaplinsky, under whose tutelage he graduated from The Julliard School with both his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees.
