MEADS Inc. awarded $80 million Project Definition-Validation contract.


HUNTSVILLE, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 17, 1996--MEADS Inc., a multinational consortium, has been awarded $80 million to conduct the MEADS Project Definition-Validation (PD-V) Program under contract to the NATO Medium Extended Air Defense System Management Agency The NATO Medium Extended Air Defense System Management Agency (abbreviated NAMEADSMA), located in Huntsville, Alabama, is an agency founded by NATO in July 1996to oversee the Medium Extended Air Defense System, a joint military project intended to replace aging NATO Patriot  (NAMEADSMA NAMEADSMA NATO Medium Extended Air Defense System Management Agency ), it was announced Thursday.

The MEADS Inc. team includes H&R Co. (a joint venture between Hughes Aircraft Hughes Aircraft Company was a major aerospace and defense company founded by Howard Hughes. The group was based near Ballona Creek, in Culver City, California, USA, on the Pacific Coast.

Hughes Aircraft was acquired by General Motors in 1985.

The PD-V program is planned to culminate in a January 1999 International Source Selection to downselect to a single contractor team for Design and Development and System Production (with an estimated value greater than $6 billion).

MEADS is planned to be fielded with U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, German Air Force and Italian Air Force

 elements beginning in 2005. Other allied nations have expressed interest in joining the MEADS program prior to the Design and Development phase of the program.

 Management Agency has headquarters. The team will conduct its program management and systems engineering in Huntsville, with Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) for major system components located at parent contractor facilities in Italy, Germany and the United States. The IPTs are populated with members from each of the five parent companies.

Stephen R. Stanvick, chairman of H&R Co., summarizing the MEADS Inc. strategy for the next two years, said, ``Our objective in the conduct of the MEADS PD-V is to make international cooperation a true success on this program, producing a best-value system design for MEADS that will feature the capabilities and products of our trans-Atlantic team members and speed this important defensive system capability into the hands of our armed forces.''
