MDL Information Systems, Inc., the recognized leader in discovery informatics for the life science and chemical industries, today announced that it will release a chemically intelligent data cartridge (1) A cartridge used to hold computer data. See cartridge.

that will allow research organizations to store and access chemical structures inside Oracle8i(TM) databases.

Companies will be able to migrate at their own pace to the new technology, while maintaining their investment in ISIS (Integrated Scientific Information System) or related MDL systems. Currently, ISIS is the most widely used platform for chemical information management, and the new chemistry data cartridge will enable researchers to use standard ISIS search techniques such as exact match, substructure substructure /sub·struc·ture/ (-struk-chur) the underlying or supporting portion of an organ or appliance; that portion of an implant denture embedded in the tissues of the jaw.

, and similarity within Oracle repositories. With the chemistry data cartridge, MDL is including its unique flexible structure matching which provides highly configurable control over chemical structure searches with flexible switches that include tautomer tautomer (tô`təmər), one of two or more structural isomers that exist in equilibrium and are readily converted from one isomeric form to another. Of the various types of tautomerism that are possible, two are commonly observed. , stereoisomer stereoisomer: see stereochemistry; isomer. , salt forms, fragment counts, and others--all within a single database search. MDL expects to release the developer's version of the chemistry data cartridge by December, 1999.

"When we first pioneered chemical information technology, it was necessarily proprietary because there was no other database technology that could handle chemical structures," said Rudy Potenzone, senior vice president of product development at MDL. "Oracle could manage dates, numbers, text, etc., but not the data type `molecule.' In recent years, however, MDL has worked to offer a solution for Oracle, first with the ISIS Relational Chemical Gateway, and now with a new chemistry data cartridge. Scientists will be able to search for chemical structures in Oracle databases using standard SQL SQL

queries in precisely the same way that they already search for other Oracle data types. But we have also taken care to ensure that customers can move to our new technology while maintaining the benefits of their ISIS technology."

"We're delighted that MDL chose to build their solution on Oracle," said Jeremy Burton, vice president of Internet Platform Marketing at Oracle. "Oracle's data cartridge technology allows companies to integrate a variety of rich data objects, including images, video clips A short video presentation. , sound files, and now chemical structures. Most research organizations already store most of their data in Oracle and MDL databases. Now, with the chemistry data cartridge from MDL, they can store and access their chemical structures and related data together within Oracle, and can leverage the same performance and scalability that they depend on for their traditional structured data."

Programmers working with MDL's chemistry data cartridge will be able to build applications using industry-standard methods and tools such as Java, Visual Basic, and C++. Therefore, companies can draw on the much larger pool of generalized gen·er·al·ized
