Byline: David Kronke Television Critic

What was Sherman Oaks' Katharine McPhee's reward for placing in the final 12 in this year's "American Idol American Idol is an annual American televised singing competition, which began its first season on June 11, 2002. Part of the Idol franchise, it originated from the British reality program Pop Idol. " competition last Thursday? Probably not as glamorous as you might expect.

She attended the Fox network's party for the finalists at Hollywood's Pacific Design Center, which sounds fun enough. Alas, she and several other finalists spent more than two hours outdoors on the event's red carpet, not getting to enter the soiree soi·ree also soi·rée

"I just want to sit down," she wearily groaned to a friend at one point during her trek through the press gantlet.

For her part, McPhee has become an early favorite in "Idol's" competition. An online betting site has put odds on McPhee winning at 6 to 1, putting her in the top four of the final dozen.

Many have responded to the 21-year-old's beauty. One party attendee was overheard describing McPhee as "(expletive) hot," and when one journalist complimented her on her party dress, McPhee modestly endeavored to conceal her cleavage cleavage, tendency of many minerals to split along definite smooth planar surfaces determined by their crystal structure. Although she says, "I'd love to be able to talk to fans," she also concedes that she doesn't want to know too much about the hype.

"I think it's better not to know" what others say, McPhee says.

"Although I was confident coming into (last Tuesday's) show, you forget everything nice that the judges said to you, and wondering what the fans think will make you nervous.'' She endeavored, heroically, not to shiver shiver

McPhee says that her initial audition in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden , performing "God Bless the Child" taught her a lot and informed her subsequent decisions in terms of what songs to perform.

"It was just a gut instinct," she says. "I just, for some reason, thought that was the song to do. Some people asked me, Is that a good choice?' And I said, Shut up that's what I want to do.' ... But Simon (Cowell) was right it's not a good song for a live show."

In the future, McPhee confesses, she's looking forward to a Broadway night competition, and kind of dreading a rock 'n' roll rock 'n' roll: see rock music.  night show.

In addition to music, McPhee's future aspirations include acting, and she admits that her thespian background informs her "Idol" experiences. "It's helped me in the sense that I get to do a sort of character when I get on stage," she says, adding that she's boggled by the idea that so many viewers can come to a passionate conclusion about her simply by seeing her for a few minutes on TV.

"It's unbelievable," McPhee says. "That's just one thing to think about that one expression you might make on screen can be taken the wrong way, when you're just like anyone who's on the street who had dreams and somehow wound up here, on this show."
