 MCMURTRY NAMED SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT,
 FEDERAL GOVERNMENT RELATIONS, FOR AETNA LIFE & CASUALTY
 HARTFORD, Conn., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Aetna Life & Casualty today announced the appointment of Vanda Bruce ("Van") McMurtry, 43, as senior vice president, federal government relations. In making the announcement, Aetna Chairman Ronald E. Compton said, "The federal government is playing an increasingly important role in the way we do business, and Van McMurtry's impressive background and extensive experience will help Aetna to participate effectively in public decision-making on federal initiatives and public affairs related to our business."
 McMurtry began his Washington service as legislative assistant to U.S. Rep. Lee H. Hamilton, D-Ind., in 1977. He was a professional staff member for the Joint Economic Committee of Congress from 1980 to 1985. In 1985, he was an associate with the Washington law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton. From 1986 to 1989, he was legislative director for U.S. Sen. Lloyd Bentsen Jr., D-Texas. Since 1989, he has been staff director and chief counsel of the Senate Finance Committee.
 McMurtry received his B.A. degree in 1972, summa cum laude, with a major in philosophy, from the University of California at Irvine. He received an M.A. from Cornell University in philosophy in 1976 and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Cornell in 1979. In 1980 he received an M.A.S. degree from Johns Hopkins University with a concentration in public administration, and in 1984 he received a J.D., cum laude, from Georgetown University. He has been admitted to the bar in Maryland and the District of Columbia.
 McMurtry and his wife, Maria, will reside with their two children in the Hartford area.
