Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell, the department's second in command, said McMurray ``brings credibility and detective experience to the job. He'll be a champion for the detective function.''

McMurray was promoted to the rank of commander in July 1995, one of only a few in the department's history to rise to the rank of commander by way of the detective ranks.

McMurray's first assignment as a commander was overseeing 600 sworn officers and civilian personnel in the Detective Services Group.

McMurray received his first command as a captain in February 1989, heading patrol operations at Newton and Rampart Area Community Police stations.

As commander of Van Nuys Division in 1994, McMurray started the Domestic Abuse Response Team, responsible for helping victims make their way through the justice system.

As a detective, McMurray worked investigations at the Hollywood Detective Division, was the aide to the commander of Detective Services Group, and was a detective supervisor at Juvenile Division.
