Byline: JUDY O'ROURKE Staff Writer

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  -- Councilwoman Marsha McLean, who was passed over for the role of mayor in 2004, likely will be named to the post by fellow council members next month.

``I think Marsha's done a good job, the voters agree,'' said outgoing Councilman Cameron Smyth Cameron Smyth is a Republican who has represented Califoria's 38th Assembly district since December of 2006. He succeeded Keith Richman who was term limited.

Prior to being elected to the state legislature, Assemblyman Smyth served on the Santa Clarita City Council, where he

City Council members are elected for staggered four-year terms and usually rotate the mayor's job each December.

The rotation will take place Dec. 12. The four remaining council members will appoint Smyth's successor, who could be installed Dec. 19.

``She is mayor pro tem and undoubtedly she will be mayor,'' Kellar said Friday. ``I probably will support her.'' He declined to elaborate on his thoughts then or now.

Santa Clarita has a city manager form of government, where the council sets policy and passes laws and the mayor's role is largely ceremonial. The city manager carries out the council's decisions.

In March, Councilman Frank Ferry championed replacing the current system with a directly elected mayor, but after a debate the council nixed the idea.

In a lackluster election, McLean, Councilman Frank Ferry and Mayor Laurene Weste were re-elected to the council in April. McLean snagged snag

McLean won her council seat in 2002.

Her resume includes a 14-year battle to save the Angeles Forest's picturesque Elsmere Canyon from being turned into a garbage dump and founding a committee that co-sponsored legislation to protect nearby Whitney and Placerita canyons.
