It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los . McKeon also announced Friday that he has asked Angeles National Forest officials to begin steps that could allow them to buy the land or accept it as a donation, said David Foy, press secretary for the congressman. The property, which has been owned by landfill companies since 1992, has been proposed as a dump since the 1980s. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, activists who oppose the dump have asked BFI BFI - brute force and ignorance to donate the land in the past, but McKeon's letter is the first formal request made by an area lawmaker, Foy said. ``It may well be a surprise to them, but others have asked BFI to make the donation,'' Foy said. ``They're noncommittal, but they don't automatically reject it.'' The letter was addressed to Arnie Berghoff who oversees the Elsmere project for BFI. Berghoff was not in the office Friday and could not be reached for comment. ``I want to get the ball rolling now,'' McKeon said in a statement. ``I am appealing to Browning-Ferris Industries to do the right thing and permanently remove the threat of a large landfill being built in the Elsmere Canyon area.'' McKeon has helped in the fight against a dump at Elsmere in the past. He was active in drafting federal parks legislation that prevented landfill operators from negotiating land swaps to develop facilities on U.S. Forest Service property. The legislation, which passed in 1996, killed BFI's plan to use a portion of Forest Service land to build a 109-million-ton landfill. It is now proposed to hold 80 million tons. That process takes two to three years. If BFI sells the land to the Forest Service, a similar but lengthier procedure must be followed that would take three to 3-1/2 years, Foy said. |
