Howard P. ``Buck'' McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, was named chairman of a new congressional subcommittee sub·com·mit·tee n. McKeon was named chairman of the Subcommittee on 21st Century Competitiveness by Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, chairman of the Education Committee. ``Buck McKeon has a proven track record as an education reformer, from strengthening Pell Grants The Pell Grant program is a type of post-secondary, educational federal grant program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. It is named after U.S. Senator Claiborne Pell and originally known as the the Basic Educational Opportunity Grant program. and student loans to streamlining job training programs,'' Boehner said. ``I look forward to Mr. McKeon continuing his progress this year as chairman of the Subcommittee on 21st Century Competitiveness.'' McKeon's subcommittee will have jurisdiction over education and training beyond the high school level, including financial aid programs such as Pell Grants and student loans; training and apprenticeship apprenticeship, system of learning a craft or trade from one who is engaged in it and of paying for the instruction by a given number of years of work.
