WASHINGTON -- Rep. Howard P. ``Buck'' McKeon announced Thursday that he is stepping down indefinitely from the House Armed Services Committee The term Armed Services Committee could refer to:
  • U.S. House Committee on Armed Services
  • U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services

Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Republican currently serves as chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee.

McKeon said he had been planning to take a leave from the military panel next year, but accelerated the move when GOP leaders asked him to make room for newly elected San Diego County Rep. Brian Bilbray.

While McKeon's departure from the panel will leave a void in advocacy for the Antelope Valley and the defense projects it cares about -- including the B-2 bomber and joint strike fighter programs -- local officials said they expect he will continue to be a strong advocate.

``Buck has always been a longtime supporter of aerospace and defense industries here in the Antelope Valley,'' said Cathy Hart, executive director of the Antelope Valley Board of Trade.

``We're not worried about it,'' she said of McKeon's departure. ``Buck is well-connected.''

In a conference call with reporters to explain his decision, McKeon said his new duties overseeing education policy have made it hard to focus on his armed services The Constitution authorizes Congress to raise, support, and regulate armed services for the national defense. The President of the United States is commander in chief of all the branches of the services and has ultimate control over most military matters.  duties.

``I've found that I've had a tough time getting to the hearings and really participating in the hearings,'' he said.

But, describing his chairmanship as being part of an elite clique (mathematics) clique - A maximal totally connected subgraph. Given a graph with nodes N, a clique C is a subset of N where every node in C is directly connected to every other node in C (i.e. C is totally connected), and C contains all such nodes (C is maximal). , McKeon said he expects he will be able to advocate for the region with greater ease.

``I've found, much like joining a fraternity, there are certain things that come to members of the fraternity,'' he said. ``Because I'm a chairman, there are certain things that I'll be able to bring to the district that I couldn't before.''

Technically, McKeon is taking a leave of absence from the panel and not resigning. That means he retains his seniority in the event he decides to return.

, though, he said he expects Kevin McCarthy, who is running to replace retiring Rep. Bill Thomas, will join the committee and keep Southern California defense interests a priority there.
