MCI TO MARKET NEW INTERNATIONAL SWITCHBAND SERVICE FOR HIGH-SPEED BANDWIDTH ON-DEMAND

WASHINGTON, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) today became the first U.S. long distance carrier to offer a new high-speed, trans-Atlantic circuit- switched bandwidth-on-demand data service, MCI International Switchband. The service will enable U.S. business customers to initiate in a single call, a digital communications link for contiguous bandwidth on-demand that can support multiple data speeds up to 1920 Kbps.
MCI will begin testing the service with a limited number of customers in April. The service is compatible with a number of European and Pacific carriers who belong to the GloBand consortium, an organization of carriers who are offering this service on a common equipment platform.
MCI International Switchband initially will be provided to the United Kingdom in conjunction with Mercury Communications, Ltd.
"International Switchband will allow our global customers to use very high-speed digital data connections to support their bandwidth- intensive global applications," said K. Paul Singh, MCI's vice president of global product marketing.
"In addition, it gives users a flexible, cost-effective alternative to international private lines," said Singh.
The service, designed to complement MCI's domestic switched digital data product line, supports international communications requirements for high-quality, contiguous bandwidth for services such as videoconferencing, remote printing, imaging, local area network (LAN) connections, radio broadcasting and other high-speed data transfer applications. Customer data calls may be established by selecting bandwidths from 256, 384, 512, 768, 1472 or 1920 Kbps. Dedicated T-1 (1.544 megabits) or E1 (2.048 megabits) access to MCI's network is required in the United States and in Europe to allow calls to originate and terminate between U.S. and European locations.
"This advanced service provides a cost-effective and versatile data communications solution on-demand, plus the flexibility and reliability required for global communications," Singh added.
Based on its testing results, MCI may make the service generally available to customers and offer it in additional countries in Europe and the Pacific later this year, according to Singh.
MCI International Switchband is part of MCI's family of Global Communications Services which include MCI International 64, MCI Fiberline and Skyline worldwide service from 9.6 Kbps. to 2.048 Mbps., cross-border services to Canada, Mexico and Alaska, international VSAT services, and turn-key global networking solutions.
MCI, headquartered in Washington, offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks. With 1992 revenue of over $10 billion, the company is the second largest long distance provider in the United States and has more than 60 offices in 55 countries and places.
