MCI TO CONTINUE PUSH FOR 800 PORTABILITY

WASHINGTON, Nov. 23 ~PRNewswire~ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) said today that it will continue to publicize the benefits of 800 number portability in response to growing customer interest, despite the FCC's decision to delay implementation of 800 Portability until May 1, 1993.
"We believe that the originally scheduled date for 800 Portability was achievable, but we understand the desire for a 57-day delay to provide an additional margin of safety," said Daniel F. Akerson, MCI's president and chief operating officer. "We are pleased that the FCC specified only a short delay, thus assuring that the positive benefits of 800 Portability will reach customers as rapidly as possible."
According to Akerson, MCI's network is fully prepared to support 800 Portability. "We are technically ready today to offer portability and are already introducing innovative new features, like MultiManager, that will provide customers with the most advanced 800 Service in the industry." MCI recently introduced MultiManager as the first 800 product that allows large businesses to split their traffic on a single 800 number among MCI and other carriers.
The 800 number market, currently estimated at $7.2 billion, is expected to become more competitive once portability occurs and customers will be permitted to take their 800 numbers to the carrier of their choice. Without portability, 800 Service customers must now remain with their original carrier and forego the benefits of competitive prices and features, unless they are willing to change their 800 numbers.
Headquartered in Washington, MCI offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks. With 1991 revenue of nearly $10 billion, the company is the second largest long distance provider in the United States and has more than 60 overseas offices in 55 countries.
