 MCI PROVIDES FREE LONG-DISTANCE CALLING
 FOR MILITARY PERSONNEL OVERSEAS
WASHINGTON, Dec. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Military personnel in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps will be able to place free long distance phone calls from overseas to anywhere in the United States through a holiday calling program provided by MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) and the Armed Forces Military Affiliate Radio System (MARS).
From Dec. 21 until Jan. 3, through the use of short-wave radio equipment staffed by MARS operators around the world, military service men and women will be able to contact 185 designated MARS stations in the United States. The domestic MARS operators will contact the soldier's family in the United States and connect the two parties using MCI's long distance network.
"We are donating domestic long distance phone calls for our nation's troops stationed overseas to make it easy for them to communicate with family members and friends during the holiday season," said Jerry Edgerton, MCI's vice president of government systems. "We are encouraging all military personnel around the globe to take advantage of the free long distance service provided during Christmas and New Years."
"Everyone in the military realizes the importance of being able to contact loved ones during the holiday season," said Robert Sutton, chief of Army MARS. "MCI and MARS are working closely together to ensure that young men and women stationed at overseas bases have the opportunity to call home during this very special time of the year."
MARS, founded more than 40 years ago, is comprised of individual systems in the Army, Air Force and Navy-Marine Corps. The membership consists of approximately 8,000 volunteer civilian amateur radio operators with some volunteer military members at military bases and aboard ships. MARS is known for MARSGRAMS and radio-telephone calls placed for military personnel overseas.
MCI with 1990 revenue of $7.68 billion, is the nation's second largest long distance provider. MCI supplies a full range of voice and data telecommunications services to businesses, residential customers and government agencies. The company is headquartered in Washington.
