MCI OFFERS FREE VALENTINE'S CALLS TO THE MILITARY
WASHINGTON, Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Army, Navy, Air Force and

Marine Corps military personnel overseas will have the opportunity to place free long distance phone calls to anywhere in the United States over the Valentine's weekend.
Under a special calling program provided by MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) and the Armed Forces Military Affiliate Radio System (MARS), U.S. servicemen and women will be able to make calls beginning today, through Monday, Feb. 17.
"We want to give back to those people who have given so much to us the opportunity to speak with their loved ones over the long Valentine's weekend," said Jerry Edgerton, MCI's vice president of government systems. "We want as many individuals as possible serving our nation overseas to take advantage of this program."
Through the use of short-wave radio equipment manned by MARS operators around the world, military servicemen and women will be able to contact 185 designated MARS stations in the United States. Domestic MARS operators will contact the soldier's family member or friend in the United States and connect the two parties using MCI's long distance network. There will be no charge for the service.
"The ongoing cooperation between MCI and the MARS program is the reason the Valentine's weekend calling offering is a reality," said Robert Sutton, chief of the Army MARS. "This is a team effort and because we are both committed to ensuring the project is successful, thousands of young men and women will benefit."
MARS, founded more than 40 years ago, is comprised of individual systems in the Army, Air Force and Navy-Marine Corps. The membership consists of approximately 8,000 volunteer civilian amateur radio operators, with some volunteer military members at military bases and aboard ships. MARS is known for MARSGRAMS and radio-telephone calls placed for military personnel overseas.
