MCI IS MAJOR PARTNER IN LARGEST ATLANTIC CABLE SYSTEM

RYE BROOK, N.Y., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI International (NASDAQ: MCIC) and 46 other international telecommunications carriers today announced the signing of a construction and maintenance agreement for the TAT-12/13 cable system, the first submarine fiber optic cable network in the Atlantic Ocean.
"This new, large capacity system will greatly enhance MCI's ability to provide customers with the high speed circuits that are required to meet the demand for new and existing services being developed in the major countries and which will need to be offered internationally," said Lawrence Codacovi, vice president for International Services of MCI International. "Participation in projects such as this consolidates MCI's position as one of the world's largest telecommunications carriers. This and other systems in which MCI has invested reflect the company's commitment to provide competitively priced, quality services to its global customers."
Unlike current point-to-point submarine cable systems, the TAT-12/13 network will offer a "self-healing" loop linking the United States with the United Kingdom and France. The link between the U.S. and the U.K. and the extension between the U.K. and France will be available for customer service in September 1995. The final link between France and the U.S. will be available in September 1996.
The system is based on the ring restoration concept with dedicated capacity built into the system to provide instant restoration in the unlikely event that a break occurs anywhere in the network. The network will also be available to restore other transatlantic fiber cables in the event that they become interrupted.
The TAT-12/13 fiber optic network will use optical amplified SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) compatible technology, the latest in undersea fiber optic technology, to handle high volumes of information. The system will be able to transmit up to 5 gigabits (billion bits) of information per second, per fiber pair. This is the equivalent of 60,000 voice conversations.
The 13,000 kilometer (8,000 mile) system will interconnect in the United States at Green Hill, Rhode Island; Lands End, U.K.; Penmarch, France; AND returns to the U.S. at Mastic Beach, Long Island. The loop is completed with a terrestrial link between Mastic Beach and Green Hill.
MCI is the second largest U.S. partner and third largest global partner to invest in the $750 million project. Other investors include telecommunications carriers from Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
MCI International is a subsidiary of the MCI Communications Corp oration. MCI offers a full range of long distance and international communication services, including "dial 1" service, MCI Card, International 800 service, MCI fax, telex, MCI Mail electronic mail, and private lines. In addition to International Vnet, services include Global Communications Service (GCS), worldwide calling to 250 countries and places, MCI CALL USA, packet switching, private voice and data networks, and television transmission.
