MCI INAUGURATES NEW CARD SERVICE WITH KDD

RYE BROOK, N.Y., June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Kokusai Denshin Denwa (KDD), of Japan, and MCI will provide their card customers with the ability to use a more cost-effective, feature-rich International Telecommunications Charge Card Service beginning in July 1993. This service follows Telecommunication Standardization Sector (formerly CCITT) recommendations and provides real time positive validation.
"This service, jointly developed by KDD and MCI, will serve to meet customers' growing needs for enhanced calling card capabilities when traveling internationally," said Seth Blumenfeld, president of MCI International, a subsidiary of the MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC). "MCI is pleased to announce KDD as the second carrier in the Pacific Rim area to handle MCI's new automated International Telecommunications Charge Card Service. The launch of this new service with KDD demonstrates MCI's continued commitment to expand its operations by developing new services with all of MCI's overseas correspondents."
For the first time MCI Charge Card customers will be able to use their MCI card to make calls from Japan to third countries. MCI customers will continue to receive the advantage of MCI CALL USA rates for calls from Japan to the U.S., as well as KDD's low rates for calls placed to other countries from Japan. MCI customers may request a new card for this service beginning today by calling their MCI Customer Service telephone number.
KDD customers visiting the U.S. will be able to call back to Japan at KDD's IDDD (International Direct Distance Dial) rates and place calls within the U.S. and to third countries at MCI's low rates. In the near future, KDD customers will also benefit from MCI's additional features, which include MCI Messenger, allowing customers to leave messages for busy numbers and MCI ExpressInfo, which provides stock quotes, weather, and other information.
MCI is negotiating with additional telecom operators and expects to provide similar calling services with other carriers before the end of the year.
MCI, headquartered in Washington, D.C., offers a full range of domestic and global voice, private line, data, messaging and value-added services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks. With 1992 revenue of more than $10 billion, the company is the second largest long distance provider in the U.S. and sixth largest international telecommunications carrier in the world and has more than 60 offices in 55 countries.
