MCI COMMENCES SERVICE ON PACRIM EAST FIBER OPTIC CABLE SYSTEM

RYE BROOK, N.Y., March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI announced that service will begin today on the PacRim East fiber optic cable system. PacRim East, being utilized by MCI along with 34 other international telecommunications carriers from 24 countries, is the first fiber optic system to Australasia.
Linking Hawaii and New Zealand, the 7,700-kilometer (4,774 miles) PacRim East cable represents the first fiber optic system to connect Australia (via the TASMAN-2 cable) and New Zealand with the United States. Service to the U.S. mainland is accomplished by the use of the HAW-5 cable between Hawaii and California. The $275.3 million PacRim East system operates over one fiber pair, consisting of four Basic System Modules each operating at 140 Mbs. The system has a total capacity of 7,560 basic circuits capable of handling 30,240 simultaneous voice conversations or any combination of voice, data and video. MCI maintains the second highest U.S. investor participation in the PacRim East cable system.
"From a telecommunications standpoint, the Pacific Rim remains an area of significant expansion and growth," said Larry Codacovi, vice president of international services for MCI International. "The commencement of service on PacRim East will greatly facilitate the capacity for expanded services in this region, including the use of both wide band and switched band capabilities. Furthermore, this historic connection will enable MCI to work more closely with telecommunications administrations at PacRim East's connecting points in Australia and New Zealand."
In addition to being used for services from the U.S. mainland to Australia, PacRim East will interconnect with other Pacific Rim cable systems to provide connectivity beyond New Zealand and Australia to the United States, Asia, Europe, Canada, Mexico and South America.
PacRim East investors include telecommunications carriers from Australia (OPTUS, OTC), New Zealand (TNZI), Japan (KDD, ITJ and IDC), TELEGLOBE Canada, the United States, Europe (BT, BTE, DBP, France Telcom), Telefonos de Mexico, and South America (ENTEL Chile and EMBRATEL).
MCI, headquartered in Washington, D.C., offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks. With 1992 revenue of more than $10 billion, the company is the sixth largest international communications carrier in the world and has more than 60 offices in 55 countries and places.
