MCI ANNOUNCES NEW INTEGRATED SWITCHED DIGITAL SERVICES PACKAGE; Provides U.S. Business Enhanced ISDN Access/Savings Options.

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 1995--Targeting the fast-growing ISDN market, MCI today announced a new, integrated package of high-speed circuit switched digit ISDN services for businesses that will make it easier and more affordable to support multi-media applications.

The new integrated service, MCI Switched Digital Services, will be offered nationwide and provides a range of expanded ISDN services to support such applications as video conferencing, document sharing, telecommuting, LAN-to-LAN data sharing, training on demand and high-speed access to the Internet. The service combines MCI Outbound Switched Digital Service and MCI 800 Digital Service.

With today's launch, MCI becomes the first major U.S. long distance carrier offering both an integrated narrowband and switched Nx64 kbps Multirate Bearer Service (MRBS) completely throughout the U.S. This capability allows customers to place one call and, in essence, obtain bandwidth-on-demand, without the need for specialized and expensive inverse multiplexing equipment on site.

Additionally, MCI becomes the first U.S. carrier to offer switched Primary Rate Interface (PRI) multirate service as an access option for wideband MRBS services. This capability allows for wideband communications between and among customers not using the MCI network with those using MCI services.

Circuit switched services represent a major growth market. Frost & Sullivan, a leading U.S. market research firm, forecasts ISDN product revenues to reach $4.9 billion this year, up from an estimated $3.8 billion for 1994. By 1996, the firm expects ISDN products to generate $6.1 billion in revenue.

MCI Switched Digital Services couples the strengths of existing product such as MCI Vision, Vnet and 800 with the benefits of circuit switched data. By fully integrating circuit switched data services with existing intelligent, network-based products, customers experience enhanced capabilities, cost saving and the convenience of a single, integrated invoice.

The new offering from MCI provides customers with the same billed-party flexibility as with MCI's standard voice services, having either the originating or terminating party pay for the digital calls. A variety of access options ar available, and include MCI provided dedicated PRI and LEC provided switched PR multirate, switched PRI (non-multirate), Basic Rate Interface (BRI) and switch digital access (SDA).

The offering is an excellent option for customers that need high-speed bandwidth periodically and/or want emergency backup for existing private networks. And, unlike private networks, where customers are charged the same monthly fees whether the service is used extensively or not at all, MCI's new offering charges customers only for what is actually used.
