MCI AND PIRELLI ANNOUNCE FIRST LARGE SCALE USE OF OPTICAL AMPLIFIERS FOR SONET

WASHINGTON, and MILAN, Italy, Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI and Pirelli Cable Corporation today announced the signing of a multimillion dollar contract for Pirelli to supply the U.S. long distance company with state-of-the-art optical amplifiers for its new SONET (Synchronous Optical Network) route from Salt Lake City to Chicago.
The new route, to be completed by the end of 1993, will cover over 1,500 miles (2,400Km) and will be the first large scale deployment of Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFA) in a long distance telecommunications network. Hundreds of the new amplifiers will be deployed by MCI.
The new MCI SONET route will initially operate at 2.5 Gbps (Gigabits-per-second) and be capable of carrying 32,256 voice transmissions over a single fiber pair.
Utilization of this technology will allow MCI to initially transmit signals up to 87 miles (140 Km) without additional amplification, doubling the current 44 mile (709Km) range.
Two key features of the new equipment are that the optical signal can be amplified without electrical signal conversion, and the existing amplifier can readily accommodate increased transmission speeds as the network is upgraded from 2.5 Gbps to 10 Gbps and higher in the future.
Pirelli's pioneering research in the field of EDFA technology started in 1988. Since then, the Milan-based firm has developed the technology into a complete range of products to suit communications market requirements. Today, Pirelli is the world leader in this new technology, with its most advanced T-30 amplifier system being deployed in MCI's network. The optical amplifiers are also covered by many internationally recognized patents held by Pirelli.
"This achievement confirms Pirelli's commitment to leading edge technologies and its innovative capability in the field of telecommunications," said Aldo Bolza, director of research and development for the Pirelli Cable Sector.
"This agreement with a world class company such as MCI is further evidence of Pirelli's ability to provide cost effective solutions for network operators and end users. This is the beginning of a new era in fiber optic telecommunications."
"MCI's utilization of this new optical technology further underscores the company's ongoing commitment to provide its customers with the best and most efficient network services," said Frank J. Kozel, Jr., MCI's senior vice president for network implementation.
"Our leadership role in deploying the most modern technology available is the cornerstone of MCI's intelligent network, making it possible for us to offer innovative products and services with unsurpassed reliability."
