MCI AND CISCO SYSTEMS ANNOUNCE MARKETING ALLIANCE

WASHINGTON, March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI and Cisco Systems, Incorporated today announced a joint marketing alliance to provide end-to-end data networking solutions by incorporating Cisco technology with MCI's new HyperStream data services -- which include frame relay and switched multimegabit data service (SMDS) -- and private lines.
Working together, the sales forces of both companies will offer prospective users custom private or hybrid data networks from MCI's family of advanced data services and Cisco's wide range of high- performance, multi-protocol routers. MCI's HyperStream services, a suite of fast packet data services designed for wide area networking, as well as private line and other data services will be available to customers through the new alliance.
To help customers install and maintain their data networks, MCI and Cisco will offer coordinated network design and post sales support. And, in an industry first, the two companies are working together on plans to provide customers the option of receiving troubleshooting support directly from Cisco through MCI's HyperStream network in the event of a router problem.
Additionally, the alliance will ensure the interoperability of MCI's and Cisco's future wide-area data networking offerings.
"One of the fastest growing segments in the telecommunications industry is router-based wide-area data networking," said Paul Weichselbaum, MCI's vice president of data marketing.
"We're very pleased to be teaming with Cisco, a leader in the bridge/router marketplace. We believe that by combining our respective strengths, we can design more effective networks to meet current and future challenges in a burgeoning data communications market," Weichselbaum said.
The MCI/Cisco alliance is expected to help fuel the growth of a variety of frame relay and SMDS applications as companies seek the most cost-effective ways to transmit large amounts of data at higher speeds. The agreement further demonstrates the two companies' continued commitment to providing customers with standards-based solutions to meet their network requirements.
"We are extremely pleased to be working with an industry leader like MCI whose HyperStream frame relay and SMDS services represent an aggressive offering in the market for high-speed packet switching services," said John Chambers, senior vice president of Cisco Systems.
"This alliance will enable us to deliver to our customer base, one of the most attractive sets of network products and services in the industry," he said.
