MCI AND BELL ATLANTIC PILOT CELLULAR PERSONAL 800 NUMBERS
WASHINGTON, July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) and Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems today announced plans to test cellular applications of MCI's Personal 800 service.
MCI Personal 800 service, the first of its kind, provides customers with a single 800 number and four-digit security code which callers can reach from any domestic phone. In April 1991, MCI introduced the first enhancement to the service with its "Follow Me" feature, which allows consumers to have their Personal 800 calls temporarily forwarded to a second location. Subscribers can easily change their terminating locations.
MCI will test the ability of its service to seamlessly deliver calls to cellular customers while they are driving in their home markets or when they "roam" in other cities. The trial offer will also allow participants to have calls routed to a voice mailbox in which the callers can leave messages.
The initial test group will be comprised of MCI employees who are also Bell Atlantic Mobile customers in the Washington/Baltimore area. The trial began on July 15, 1992 and will continue for a three-month period.
The MCI-Bell Atlantic trial will allow participants to route their calls by calling an 800 number and using a simple number sequence to change the termination of their MCI Personal 800 numbers -- whenever and wherever they choose. Callers may dial a single 800 number from any domestic phone to automatically connect with the Personal 800 owner. Trial participants may give their 800 number to an unlimited number of family members, friends, and business associates .
"The ability to have calls routed to multiple locations, including cellular phones, adds an exciting dimension to MCI's Personal 800 service," said Gerald H. Taylor, president of MCI Consumer Markets. "This new service is flexible, easy-to-use and alleviates the frustration of not being able to reach people who may be commuting from one location to another."
"Through this trial with MCI, we will continue to investigate the scope of wireless communication services, ultimately enabling us to further enhance our offerings to our customers," said Richard J. Lynch, vice president for Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems. "This trial project underlines our commitment to creating a family of flexible services, delivering location-independent telecommunications to all types of consumers."
MCI Personal 800 service, introduced in October 1990, allows customers to receive 800 calls directly into their homes, for a subscription fee of $5 per month and a low per-minute rate. MCI's Personal 800 has been popular with customers who have parents living far away, whose children are living away from home, and who travel frequently and want to call home.
MCI Communications Corporation, headquartered in Washington, is the nation's second largest long distance provider. MCI serves business, government and residential customers with a wide array of domestic and global telecommunications services. MCI's Consumer Markets offers residential customers a variety of products and services including: Dial "1", MCI PrimeTime, Personal 800, MCI Messenger, Operator Services, the MCI Card, MCI Around the World and Friends & Family. Friends & Family, MCI's most popular savings plan, offers a 20 percent bonus savings to customers who call other MCI customers in their Calling Circle.
