MCI, WELLFLEET COMMUNICATIONS AGREE TO MARKET
 ADVANCED DATA PRODUCTS AND SERVICES
WASHINGTON, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) and Wellfleet Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: WFLT), today announced a marketing alliance to meet businesses' growing demand for high-speed data networking solutions to link multi-vendor, mixed-media local area networks (LANs).
MCI's and Wellfleet's sales forces will offer end-to-end, customized private or hybrid data network solutions in conjunction with MCI's family of virtual private data services (VPDS) such as frame relay and private line data services.
The business relationship pairs the global data resources of MCI with Wellfleet, one of the leading vendors of high performance, multi-protocol internetworking systems.
The alliance is expected to drive the growth of frame relay applications in the commercial marketplace as corporations' requirements expand for cost-efficient ways to applications in the commercial marketplace as corporations move large amounts of information quickly within a seamless network.
"Router-based data networks are one of the fastest growing segments of the internetworking market," said Don Heath, MCI vice president for data marketing. "Our alliance with Wellfleet reflects our commitment to provide customers with standards-based data solutions to address their requirements today, as well as give them optimal flexibility and cost-effective alternatives for the future."
According to industry estimates, the 1992 data market represents approximately $8 billion of the $55 billion long distance industry and is growing at a compounded annual rate of 15 percent. The market for internetworking solutions, which is part of the data market, is approximately $600 million with annual growth over the next three to five years averaging 35 percent to 40 percent, according to industry analysts.
"Frame Relay services are a key element of future corporate internetworks," said Gary Bowen, Wellfleet senior vice president, marketing and field operations. "This alliance reflects our belief in Frame Relay as an important technology enabler that will significantly enhance the growth of data internetworks over time."
MCI and Wellfleet will begin marketing in tandem with the commercial availability of MCI's VPDS frame relay service announced today.
MCI services available through the program will include VPDS frame relay, Switched 56/64, Switched T-1 and private line services. Wellfleet products offered will include their family of multiprotocol internetworking routers and bridges which range from the low end Feeder Node, to the high end Concentrator Node, which permits up to 52 LAN or 52 wide area network connections.
Wellfleet is the eighth MCI marketing alliance agreement since the program was established in 1990. The program was developed to allow MCI to work with select telecommunications industry leaders to provide customers with customized network transmission and equipment solutions.
Wellfleet also was selected by MCI last year to provide the gateway connections within the new cell-based data network platform MCI developed to provide its VPDS frame relay service.
Headquartered in Washington, MCI offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest all-digital networks. The company, with 1991 revenue of $9.5 billion, is the second largest long distance provider in the United States and has more than 60 overseas offices in 55 countries.
Wellfleet Communications is a leading supplier of standards-based multi-protocol router/bridges designed for organizations building multi-vendor, mixed-media enterprise internetworks. Its products offer users high performance regardless of the number of LAN/WAN interfaces or protocols supported. Wellfleet products are currently installed in engineering, manufacturing, financial, telecommunications, government and academic environments throughout the world.
