MCDONNELL DOUGLAS, ELBIT TO JOINTLY MARKET DASH HELMET

PARIS, June 13 /PRNewswire/ -- McDonnell Douglas Corp. of St. Louis and Elbit Ltd. of Haifa, Israel signed an agreement to jointly market a helmet-mounted targeting and display system called DASH.
DASH stands for Display and Sight Helmet, an innovative system developed and produced by Elbit for tactical aircraft.
John Capellupo, executive vice president of McDonnell Douglas, and Emmanuel Gill, president and chief executive officer of Elbit, signed the agreement today at the Paris Air Show.
The agreement calls for both companies to actively seek to increase interest in the DASH system among current and future operators of the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet. This will include demonstrations, briefings and documentation.
Demonstrations will be conducted for operational commanders who may be able to help establish an operational requirement for a helmet- mounted sight and display system. F/A-18 crews who visit McDonnell Douglas will be able to use the DASH system in the company's F/A-18 simulator and will get a briefing of the system's tactical utility.
Elbit will provide McDonnell Douglas with a DASH system and a night vision goggle head-up display for use in the F/A-18 simulator demonstrations. If an operational requirement for an F/A-18 helmet- mounted sight and display system is established, McDonnell Douglas and Elbit will work together to incorporate the DASH system into the Hornet.
Elbit and McDonnell Douglas have worked together to integrate DASH into the F/A-18 flight simulator and the F/A-18 aircraft itself for demonstration to the Israeli Air Force.
The operational requirements of Elbit's DASH were developed by the Israeli Air Force in an effort to enhance the air-to-air and air-to- ground performance of tactical aircraft. The system enlarges the operational envelope and provides higher hit probabilities.
Cues displayed on the visor of the Elbit helmet include aircraft angle of attack, Mach number, altitude, heading, weapons selected, distance to an air-to-air target, and pilot head position. They are displayed over a 20-degree field of view.
McDonnell Douglas is the No. 1 defense contractor in the United States and a recognized world leader in the design and manufacture of tactical combat aircraft. It produces the F-15 Eagle, F/A-18 Hornet, AV-8B Harrier II and T-45 Goshawk from its St. Louis manufacturing plant.
Elbit is a pre-eminent aerospace electronics company with recognized capabilities in the development, manufacture and integration of combat aircraft avionics equipment and systems.
