MCDONALD'S WINS SPOT IN TONY NEW CENTER.

Byline: Patricia Farrell Aidem Staff Writer

VALENCIA - In the end, the Big Mac had more clout than the Krispy Kreme Krispy Kreme is a chain of doughnut stores. Its parent company is Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (NYSE: KKD), based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, United States. .

McDonald's Corp. bested the melt-in-your-mouth doughnut chain for a spot in the trendy, upscale Promenade at Town Center, under construction and set to open in the fall.

``We had a deal with Krispy Kreme, but McDonald's called us at the very end with a phenomenal deal, one of the best-looking McDonald's out there,'' Ron Rasak, president of the development company RKR RKR Rydberg-Klein-Rees
RKR Royal Knight Regiment (Onate High School band; Las Cruces, NM)
Inc., said Friday. ``We're spending a fortune on building this center and they're going along with our design.''

Pavilions, the high-end grocery chain owned by Vons, will anchor the new shopping center shopping center, a concentration of retail, service, and entertainment enterprises designed to serve the surrounding region. The modern shopping center differs from its antecedents—bazaars and marketplaces—in that the shops are usually amalgamated into . Also planned are a slew of restaurants, the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Valley's first Sanwa Bank branch and a Seattle's Finest coffeehouse with a board room available for the public.

The Promenade will cover 54,000 square feet on the high-profile northwest corner of McBean and Magic Mountain parkways.

Nordstrom Rack, the tony chain's discount division, went the way of Krispy Kreme, Rasak said. The two sides couldn't agree on a deal, after Nordstrom showed interest when the center began signing tenants a year ago.

``They just couldn't come up to our price,'' he said.

Opening an upper end shopping center as the economy begins to slump isn't a concern, Rasak said.

``Not at all, it doesn't worry us,'' he said. ``We're used to building in recession. You get better deals. An national tenants don't look at the short term. They're looking 20 years ahead.''

The Promenade, he added, is planned in part as a social gathering spot.

``There's nothing like it - it's a village atmosphere with water falls, creeks grottoes, fountains, stages, lots of bridges, nice muted colors, lots of outside seating,'' he said.

``It really a kind of center where people can just gather and visit. We know the responsibility we have for owning this corner. We don't take that lightly, it's pretty much part of the cornerstone of Valencia. We've got to do a good job.''
