MCDONALD'S SURPASSES HALF-BILLION DOLLAR MARK ON PURCHASE OF RECYCLED MATERIALS; CELEBRATES EARTH EFFORT MONTH

 OAK BROOK, Ill., April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Celebrating the three-year anniversary of its McRecycle USA program, McDonald's announced that it has spent more than $600 million on recycled materials -- twice its original goal.
 "When we created McRecycle USA in April 1990, McDonald's committed itself to purchase at least $100 million worth of recycled products every year," said Bob Langert, McDonald's director of environmental affairs. "I'm proud that we've been able to double that amount and provide necessary end markets for recycled materials."
 McDonald's is one of the largest purchasers of recycled products and has identified more than 200 items for use in its restaurants that can be made from recycled materials.
 "McRecycle USA is a model recycling program," said Phil Bailey, National Recycling Coalition director of market development. "NRC congratulates McDonald's for its dedication to the purchase of recycled materials. Providing end markets for such products is an important part of recycling."
 Bailey noted that McDonald's is a charter member of the Buy Recycled Business Alliance, a leading group of companies committed to buying products containing recycled content.
 A good example of McDonald's commitment is in Kent, Wash., where McDonald's opened a restaurant last year that uses recycled materials in virtually all areas of construction. This restaurant, located outside Seattle, features:
 -- a copper roofing system made of recycled radiators and wires
 -- seating and tabletops made from recycled steel, aluminum and
 plastics
 -- stainless steel equipment in the kitchen fabricated from
 recycled materials, as well as the menu board, condiment bins
 and buckets
 -- steel doors, frames, interior doors, window sills, aluminum
 window frames and insulation inside the walls and ceiling --
 all made of recycled materials
 -- mops made from old McDonald's crew uniforms.
 McDonald's restaurants also use recycled tires for non-skid Playland surfaces, recycled photographic film in walls built of insulated concrete blocks or used computer casings in roofing tiles.
 McDonald's announcement was made in conjunction with the beginning of the company's Earth Effort Month, a program designed to encourage environmental awareness and education in the community. As part of Earth Effort, many McDonald's restaurants will be taking part in local environmental programs. Some examples include:
 -- Washington, D.C.-area McDonald's restaurants are supporting and
 participating in a Clean-Up Day at 13 area National Park Service
 locations.
 -- Local Seattle restaurants, along with the Washington State PTA,
 are sponsoring for the second year their highly successful
 Recycling Games. Teams of elementary school students will
 compete in such categories as the Recycling Obstacle Course,
 the Trash Separation Race and Team Can Crushing.
 -- Hawaii McDonald's restaurants are working with their local Girl
 Scouts in a tree-planting program. The partnership will focus
 on those areas devastated last year by Hurricane Iniki.
 -- Eastern New England McDonald's owner/operators are presenting to
 305 area fourth-grade classrooms rainforest curriculum kits
 developed in conjunction with the Massachusetts Horticultural
 Society.
 Other McDonald's environmental activities during the month of April include:
 -- the signing of an agreement to participate in the U.S.
 Environmental Protection Agency's Green Lights program, which is
 designed to help businesses install more energy-efficient
 lighting. McDonald's restaurants using this system will use 30
 percent less energy while increasing lighting levels more than
 25 percent.
 -- the two-year anniversary and continued implementation of
 McDonald's Waste Reduction Action Plan, written in conjunction
 with the Environmental Defense Fund.
 -- the announcement of participants in the McDonald's All-Star
 Green Teens program. McDonald's, in conjunction with the
 Student Conservation Association, will recognize high school
 students for their local environmental achievements and will
 send a group of them to Yellowstone National Park for a two-
 week environmental internship during the summer.
 -- the acceptance of a Corporate Responsibility Award from the
 Society for the Advancement of Management, in recognition of
 McRecycle USA's accomplishments.
 -- the use of specially designed carry-out bags and trayliners,
 describing McDonald's environmental policies and initiatives.
