A large percentage of the works in the Lannan gift will be included in the re- installation of the collection in June, coinciding with the first anniversary of the opening of the MCA's new building and sculpture garden.

The Lannan Foundation was founded in 1960 by J. Patrick Lannan, a Chicago financier and long-time director of International Telephone and Telegraph, as well as an enthusiastic collector of contemporary art. After his death in 1983, his son J. Patrick Lannan Jr. became president of the foundation, and in 1986 expanded the activities of the foundation to include a national program of grant-making in the areas of visual art and literature. In 1994, the foundation extended its philanthropic activities, initiating the Indigenous Communities Program to address the urgent needs of Native American communities.

The MCA is fortunate to have had a long and positive relationship with the Lannan Foundation. The foundation has provided generous support for more than a decade, and has funded either in whole or in part a wide range of exhibitions. In 1997, it is providing funding support for three exhibitions at the MCA: "Performance Anxiety" and "Crimes and Splendors: The Desert Cantos of Richard Misrach," both opening April 19, and "Mona Hatoum," opening July 19.

"The Lannan Foundation's interest has always been in supporting cutting-edge art," said Consey. "They, like the MCA, have since their earliest days been focused on the artists who are breaking new ground, supporting and developing artists before they became known. It is this congruence con·gru·ence

with the MCA's mission that has made their gift to the MCA particularly appropiate."

The Lannan Foundation made the decision to disperse its renowned collection in 1995, choosing to donate important works in the collection to public institutions, where the art would have a much wider and more diverse audience. The three museums chosen as beneficiaries were in the two cities where the family and foundation has had its strongest ties: Chicago and Los Angeles. Each museum was asked to submit a list prioritizing their choices, with written explainations of how the works would fit their collections.

"It was very exciting to be allowed to select works, almost like kids turned loose in a toy store," said Lucinda Barnes, curator of collections, and coordinator of the curatorial team that developed the MCA's list. "This gift allows us to address gaps in the collection with important works we could otherwise never acquire, to significantly expand upon established strengths of the collection, and to add works by artists who are new to the collection. A primary goal of our collection philosophy is to continually broaden and diversify the artist base of the collection. Nearly half of the artists added through the Lannan gift are new to the collection."

The Museum of Contemporary Art is located at 220 East Chicago Avenue, one block east of Michigan Avenue, in Chicago. The MCA's new building and sculpture garden began regular public hours on July 2, 1996. The museum is open Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The museum is closed Monday. Suggested general admission is $6.50 and $4 for students and seniors with I.D. Members and children 12 years of age and under are admitted free.
