Beverage giant Seagram Co. announced Monday that it has changed the 72-year-old name of its MCA MCA
 in full Music Corporation of America

Entertainment conglomerate. It was founded in Chicago in 1924 by Jules Stein as a talent agency. In the 1960s it bought Decca Records and Universal Pictures, and today it produces films, music, and television shows.
 Inc. entertainment operations to Universal Studios Inc. as part of a strategy to unify brand names.

The change, which had been expected for several weeks, takes advantage of the Universal name being better recognized because of the two Universal Studios theme parks and Universal Pictures film studio. Renamed operations include Universal Home Video, Universal Concerts and Universal Television Group.

The exceptions will be three of the music operations - labels MCA Records MCA Records was an American-based record company owned by MCA Inc., which later gave way to the larger MCA Music Entertainment Group, which MCA Records was still part of.  and MCA Records Nashville and publisher MCA Publishing. The names will remain unchanged because of the recognition those businesses already carry, said spokeswoman Iris Gelt.

Seagram also updated the 81-year-old Universal logo, showing a globe of the world, with a three-dimensional typeface The design of a set of printed characters, such as Courier, Helvetica and Times Roman. The terms "typeface" and "font" are used interchangeably, but the typeface is the primary design, while the font is the particular implementation and variation of the typeface, such as bold or italics  of ``Universal'' designed by London-based Identica Partnership. The logo has been changed six times since the original Universal Moving Pictures was launched by pioneer filmmaker Carl Laemmle

Laemmle had founded Universal Film Manufacturing Co. in Chicago in 1912 and then relocated to a 230-acre ranch that was dubbed Universal City, making it the oldest movie-making operation in the region. The studio is the world's largest, covering 415 acres with 32 sound stages.

The decision to change the name was first mentioned by Seagram Chief Executive Officer Edgar Bronfman Two persons are named Edgar Bronfman (father and son). They are the son and grandson of Seagram founder Samuel Bronfman:
  • Edgar Miles Bronfman (born 1929), a Jewish-Canadian businessman and former long-time president of the World Jewish Congress
  • Edgar Bronfman, Jr.
 Jr. last year shortly after Seagram bought 80 percent of MCA from Matsushita Electric Industrial for $5.7 billion.

Of the six Universal logos, one of the best remembered was the second with a droning propeller plane circling the globe and used between 1930 and 1936. The logo was last updated in 1990 after Japan-based Matsushita bought MCA for $6.6 billion.

The MCA name has existed since 1924 when Jules Stein and William Goodheart founded Music Corporation of America, a Chicago-based booking agency for big bands. Led by legendary entertainment mogul Lew Wasserman Lew Wasserman (March 15, 1913 - June 3, 2002) was a Hollywood agent and studio executive credited with first creating and then taking apart the studio system in a career spanning more than six decades. , MCA bought the Universal Studios property in 1958 and incorporated as MCA Inc., then acquired Universal Pictures parent Decca Records four years later.
