MCA FORMS INTERACTIVE SOFTWARE COMPANY

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The formation of Universal Interactive Studios, a new business unit that will develop and publish interactive software, was announced today by Sid Sheinberg, president and chief operating officer, MCA Inc. The new unit will be headed by Skip Paul, executive vice president, MCA Inc., and president, MCA Enterprises Inc. In a separate announcement, Robert Biniaz was also named chief operating officer of the new company.
"Although a number of MCA groups have begun to extend their product lines and skill sets into the interactive area, we felt the time has arrived to establish a `dedicated' activity to ensure that MCA will participate fully in the various types of interactive product markets that develop. In order to maximize our effectiveness, Universal Interactive Studios will, when appropriate, work with other MCA business units to utilize existing marketing and distribution capabilities, including the Music Entertainment Group under the leadership of Al Teller and the Home Entertainment Group under Tom Wertheimer," Sheinberg stated.
Universal Interactive Studios will be a fully staffed software publisher with in-house development capabilities as well as relationships with other outside developers. Paul stated: "In addition to developing our own titles, we will be making alliances within the software community, including acquisitions of and investments in existing software companies. We will also be working with various groups within MCA to explore location-based interactive entertainment, including possible projects with MCA's theme park group as well as Cineplex Odeon."
Universal Interactive Studios' first endeavor will be to develop and publish interactive software titles for the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer system. The company's first title will be "Jurassic Park Interactive," which is expected to be released during the first quarter of 1994.
"3DO provides new technology that we plan to exploit to its fullest," Paul said. "The capabilities of the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer system provide an unprecedented level of realism to interactive software products."
It is expected that UNI Distribution Corp. (a unit of MCA Music Entertainment Group) will serve as an important part of the distribution network for MCA's new interactive software titles. Teller, chairman of MCA Music Entertainment Group, commented: "The development and distribution of interactive software has been of particular interest to the Music Entertainment Group, and I am looking forward to working with Skip Paul and this new business unit."
MCA and Matsushita are equity partners of The 3DO Co., with Paul as their representative on the 3DO board of directors. MCA is the largest shareholder of Cineplex Odeon. 3DO and Interactive Multiplayer are trademarks of The 3DO Co.
