) to the optical planning and design solution that formed part of Marconi's Netscient software product suite--a trademark brand acquired by Marconi in 2001.

Under the terms of the deal, MBT will be responsible for the development and maintenance of the software and will integrate it into the wider MBT portfolio of services. MBT will manage the existing customer base and provide support to Marconi, which will continue to use the software for in-house purposes.

"The telecom industry has a very changeable landscape which means that MBT has to be constantly ahead of next generation developments, offering solutions that meet evolving client requirements," said John Helleur, chief executive officer of MBT. "The ownership of Netscient's intellectual property rights is testament to our commitment to innovation, and we believe it gives us a distinct advantage in the field of network planning."
