MBNA TO ISSUE CREDIT CARDS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

 NEWARK, Del., Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- MBNA Corporation (NYSE: KRB) today announced the formation of MBNA International Bank, Limited to issue credit cards in the United Kingdom.
 Approval for the new bank has been obtained from the Bank of England and the Federal Reserve Board.
 "We will extend our marketing strategy to the U.K., selling to people with a strong common interest," said Bruce L. Hammonds, vice chairman, MBNA America Bank.
 "We think the time is right to enter the credit card business in the U.K.," said Thomas P. McGinley, chief executive of MBNA International Bank, Limited. "MBNA will provide a quality product backed by superior service."
 The new bank, a subsidiary of MBNA America Bank, will begin operations in September in Chester, England with a business development office in London.
 MBNA Corporation, a bank holding company, is the parent of MBNA America Bank, N.A., a national bank with $10.6 billion in managed loans. MBNA, the country's second largest lender through bank credit cards, also provides retail deposit, individual loan, card acceptance, and financial transaction processing services.
