MAZDA ANNOUNCES THAT IT WILL MARKET

IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Mazda Motor of America (MMA) announced today that it will market an all-new mid-size luxury sedan in the United States. The car will be shown at the Frankfurt International Auto Show at the beginning of this month. When the new sedan goes on sale here in the spring of 1994 as a 1995 model, it will give the company four distinctive sedan lines.
"We have very high hopes for this new model and expect it to become the leading mid-size luxury sedan," said Kazuo "Sonny" Sonoguchi, president of MMA. "We feel that its combination of distinctive design, high level of fit and finish, performance and exceptional ride and handling will make it the new benchmark in its segment. Adding this new vehicle to the Mazda line will be beneficial for our customers, our dealers and for Mazda."
A choice of two dual overhead camshaft, 24-valve V6 engines will be available on the new car, both of which promise excellent power and response with low levels of noise and fuel consumption. An all-new four-wheel independent suspension combines the excellent handling of an unequal-length A-arm suspension with the smooth ride quality of a trailing-arm configuration. Anti-lock brakes and dual airbags will be standard; traction control will be available to enhance control on slippery surfaces.
The car will be constructed in a factory in Hofu, Japan, that was built specifically for the manufacture of luxury cars and employs a high level of automation. The production facility is recognized as one of the most advanced auto manufacturing plants in the world.
Mazda will also exhibit its new hydrogen-powered HR-X2 concept vehicle at Frankfurt, as well as displaying two advanced-technology engines -- the clean-burning hydrogen rotary and the company's unique Miller-cycle engine.
