Parks and state Sen. Richard Alarcon, D-Van Nuys, each said they could do more to provide the visible leadership they believe residents want, which they are not getting from Hahn.

``If you want to continue with what we have, with the allegations of corruption, with the 'pay to play,' then vote for what you have,'' Parks said. ``But, if you want a change, vote for me.''

The comments came during a forum of about 100 people, sponsored by the Stephen Wise Temple and the Jewish Home for the Aging.

Hahn was invited but did not attend. The fifth major candidate, former Assembly Speaker Bob Hertzberg, was forced to cancel because of a family emergency.

Parks cited his experience as chief of police and the fact he came late to politics, with his election to the City Council two years ago.

``I am not a career politician,'' Parks said. ``I think the reason we have so many of the problems we have today is because of career politicians.''

Villaraigosa, who lost to Hahn four years ago, said he will bring a new sense of purpose to the city, and will bring caring and consensus-building to the job.

``I believe in this city. I believe in the people who live here,'' Villaraigosa said. ``I care about what happens. I still believe in what John F. Kennedy "John Kennedy" and "JFK" redirect here. For other uses, see John Kennedy (disambiguation) and JFK (disambiguation).

Alarcon said he offers a brand of leadership willing to take on the special interests.

``I'm the long shot. The dark horse. The little engine that could,'' Alarcon said. ``That's why I have the least amount of money of all the candidates. But, you know what? I like my position.

``The way I look at it is it's fourth down in the fourth quarter with 98 yards to go for a victory. Why not throw a bomb and vote for Alarcon.''
