Byline: Rick Orlov Staff Writer

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Antonio Ramon Villaraigosa (born Antonio (Tony) Ramon Villar, Jr. on January 23, 1953) is the mayor of Los Angeles, California. ``We were helped by the people of this nation when we had our earthquake,'' Villaraigosa said in signing the executive order. ``Now it is our turn to let the people of the Gulf Coast know they do not stand alone - Angelenos and Americans alike will be by their side.''

Villaraigosa said the volunteers can come from any city agency but must be prepared to deal with the hardships on the scene.

In addition, Villaraigosa said he met with all of the city's general managers and directed them to review operations to see what could be made available for disaster-relief efforts.

``We know what the needs are now, but when they rebuild, they are going to need a different kind of help - building inspectors, engineers and the like,'' Villaraigosa said. ``We haven't been asked for anything specific yet, but I want us to be ready.''

Villaraigosa said he also met with a number of African-American ministers who have churches with ties to the states hit the hardest to coordinate a response, and said he has asked for a review of the city's emergency plans.
