MAYOR PICKS 5 TO LEAD REFORMS LAUSD OFFICIAL SHARPLY CRITICAL.

Byline: NAUSH BOGHOSSIAN Staff Writer

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Antonio Ramon Villaraigosa (born Antonio (Tony) Ramon Villar, Jr. on January 23, 1953) is the mayor of Los Angeles, California. He is the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles since Cristobal Aguilar in 1872.  on Saturday appointed five educators to lead reforms for three clusters of low-performing schools he's poised to control starting Jan. 1.

Named to the mayor's education leadership team are Green Dot Public Schools' chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

assistant superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. It was usually the lowest rank that could be held by a European officer, most of whom joined the police at this rank.  Lynn Winters also were named.

By strategically choosing a broad range of educators, the mayor could be signaling his desire to bring a variety of reform ideas to the table.

``These are five world-class leaders in the field of education, each of whom has served as a bold change agent at every stage of their careers,'' Villaraigosa said in a statement.

The educators will begin work immediately, although individual salaries have not been determined. The educators were hired within the Mayor's Office but will be paid with funds from foundations.

Tuck will direct the Mayor's Partnership for School Excellence's reform efforts while Pruitt will oversee primary-grade curriculum and Rousseau will oversee secondary-level curriculum.

Irvin will implement partnership initiatives and Winters will serve as a consultant for performance goals.

Under Assembly Bill 1381, the mayor's education reform legislation that was signed into law in September, Villaraigosa will directly oversee three of the district's lowest-performing high schools and their feeder elementary and middle schools.

, chief counsel for the district, said he's disappointed that the mayor is moving forward despite a pending court challenge.

``It shows exactly what's wrong with AB 1381 because this isn't a partnership. The Mayor's Office has selected these people without ever seeing fit to consult with (LAUSD Superintendent) David Brewer about who he was looking to select, what their role would be and what they intend to do with these individuals,'' Reed said. ``That's a dictatorship, not a partnership.''
