In a replay of the first direct election of the city's mayor in 1996, Roberts, a retired Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  administrator, beat Councilman Mike Singer in the mayoral race.

``It means we will continue the progress. We'll work hard to continue developing jobs and keeping people off the freeway and home with their families,'' Roberts said after the final ballots were in.

The loss cost Singer, a Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County firefighter, his council seat, because he had to refrain from filing for re-election in order to run for mayor.

Also out of city government is Councilwoman Deborah Shelton, Singer's partner in many 3-2 council votes. She fell behind Hearns and Idleman in the race for two four-year terms on the council.

Behind Shelton in that race was George Salas, a retired National Aeronautics and Space Administration National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), civilian agency of the U.S. federal government with the mission of conducting research and developing operational programs in the areas of space exploration, artificial satellites (see satellite, artificial),  contracting officer who represents Singer on the city Planning Commission.

Visokey won the race for Singer's council seat, finishing ahead of insurance broker Marvin Crist and former Mayor George Root. Lagging in that race were Antelope Valley College administrator Walter Briggs and recording engineer Rich Brown.

Much of the election rhetoric revolved around Singer's claims that the city's redevelopment agency is spending too much money on glamorous projects, racking up $1 billion that the city must pay back over the next three decades.

Roberts, a retired Antelope Valley College dean first elected to the council in 1992 and elected mayor four years later, campaigned on a ``continue the progress'' platform, taking credit for projects such as the baseball stadium, the new library, and sheriff's and Metrolink stations.

Idleman, chairwoman of the city's crime task force, stressed fighting crime in her campaign, saying that attracting jobs to Lancaster first requires making it a safe place to live.
