MAY DEPARTMENT STORES NAMES LOEB PRESIDENT

 ST. LOUIS, June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The May Department Stores Company (NYSE: MA) today announced that Thomas A. Hays, president of May, has been named to the newly created position of deputy chairman of May and that Jerome T. Loeb, vice chairman and chief financial officer of May, has been promoted to president of May, effective June 14, 1993.
 David C. Farrell, May chairman and chief executive officer, said, "We are pleased to announce Mr. Loeb's promotion as president of The May Department Stores Company. He is a seasoned executive with almost 30 years of experience in May. Mr. Hays, who became president in 1985, will become deputy chairman, a newly created position." Mr. Farrell stated that, "Tom Hays and Jerry Loeb have each contributed significantly to May's success. They will each continue to carry out their current responsibilities in their new positions, and, over time, Mr. Loeb will assume Mr. Hays' responsibilities."
 Mr. Hays, age 60, joined May in 1969 as vice president of finance and operations of Venture Stores. He became president of Venture in 1972 until 1974, when he became chairman of the Hecht Company in Washington, D.C. Mr. Hays returned to St. Louis as the chief executive officer of Venture Stores in 1980. In 1982, he became vice chairman of May. He joined the board of directors of May in 1983 and has served as president of May since 1985.
 Mr. Hays received a B.A. degree from Wabash College. He is married to the former Martha Pearson, and they have four children, Jonathon, Elizabeth, James and Elaine. Mr. Hays is active on the board of trustees of Wabash College, on the board of directors of the YMCA of Greater St. Louis and as chairman of the board of the Regional Housing Alliance in St. Louis. Mr. Hays also serves as a director of Mercantile Bancorporation Inc. and Union Electric Company.
 Mr. Loeb, age 52, joined May in 1964 at Famous-Barr. He was appointed a corporate vice president for information systems in 1974. In 1977, he became senior vice president of May and then executive vice president, finance for Hecht's, working with Mr. Hays in Washington, D.C. In 1979, he returned to St. Louis as executive vice president, corporate development. In 1981, he was elected executive vice president, chief financial officer and controller, in 1984 joined the board of directors of May and, since 1986, has served as vice chairman and chief financial officer of May.
 A native of St. Louis, Mr. Loeb received a B.S. degree from Tulsa University and a M.A. degree from Washington University of St. Louis. He is married to the former Carol Bodenheimer of St. Louis and they have two children, Daniel and Kelly. Mr. Loeb is vice chairman of the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis and vice chairman of Junior Achievement of Mississippi Valley. He is a commissioner of the St. Louis Science Center and an active board member of Barnes-Jewish, Inc. and of National Junior Achievement.
 The May Department Stores Company, headquartered in St. Louis, is the largest department store retailer in the United States, operating 302 department stores and 3,592 Payless ShoeSource stores.
