Flacks, a senior at Harvard-Westlake of Studio City, won the girls' race in 18 minutes, 5 seconds to finish well more than a minute ahead of runner-up and teammate Bridget Ballard (19:26).

The smooth-striding Flacks came within a second of equaling the 10th- fastest time ever run on the course, where Harvard-Westlake placed four runners among the top five finishers in winning a third consecutive league team title.

His victory, by a margin of 9.6 seconds over runner-up and teammate Mark Takata, kept Matusak in contention to become the first runner to win four consecutive Mission League titles.

``It was big to win three in a row,'' he said, ``but I'm looking ahead to the bigger races at the (Southern Section Div. II) final, and state and regionals. ... The postseason push for Matusak begins Nov. 15 at the section prelims. He has reached the section final twice and finished third in state last year in his first appearance.

Loyola coach Lalo Diaz fully expects his junior All-American to qualify for state again.

``We compare him with (former Belmont of Los Angeles runner) Roman Gomez, who was the last double state-meet champion,'' Diaz said of Matusak, who ran a 4:11 mile as a sophomore. ``He has all the tools and I think more speed, and I think that's what separates Mark from a lot of really good past distance runners distance runner
