MATTEL AND COLUMBIA PICTURES ANNOUNCE TOY LINE BASED ON UPCOMING FILM, 'LAST ACTION HERO'
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Mattel Inc. (NYSE: MAT) and Columbia Pictures Entertainment, Inc. today announced an agreement to launch a line of toys based on Columbia Pictures' upcoming action adventure film, "Last Action Hero," starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, to be released summer 1993. The line will be designed, manufactured and marketed by Mattel through an exclusive licensing agreement between the two companies. The "Last Action Hero" line will include realistically sculpted action figures and playset accessories based on this action-adventure fantasy about a teen-age movie fan who steps out of the real world and into the screen with his movie hero Jack Slater, played by Schwarzenegger. The toys will be unveiled at the February American International Toy Fair in New York, and will be available at retail to coincide with the June film release date. "We believe this will be a movie that appeals to children of all ages," said Jill Barad, president and chief operating officer, Mattel Inc. "It's an epic adventure filled with lots of action and humor and features one of the film industry's most popular stars." In a recent nationwide poll of children ages 8-14, conducted by the children's network Nickelodeon, Schwarzenegger was named favorite movie actor for the third time. Mattel Inc., with record 1991 revenues of $1.65 billion, is a worldwide leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of children's toys. With headquarters in El Segundo, Calif., Mattel has offices and facilities in more than 20 foreign countries and sells its products in more than 100 nations throughout the world. -0- 1/12/93 /CONTACT: Donna Gibbs of Mattel, 310-524-3524/ (MAT)
