MATSON TO PLAY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF THE PACIFIC.

A player assigned to the infield.

Noun 1. infielder - (baseball) a person who plays a position in the infield
 at Valencia High, has orally committed to a University of the Pacific softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  scholarship after visiting the campus last weekend.

Matson, an infielder who batted .421 with five home runs, 19 RBIs and 10 stolen bases as a junior, picked UOP (micro OPeration) The "u" is the substitute letter for the µ symbol. See microinstruction.  over Wisconsin.

``I visited Wisconsin, and it was a much bigger school. Pacific is smaller, and I like that better,'' Matson said. ``I'm happy this is all done with and I don't have to worry about it anymore. Now I can just play.''

Academics was also an important priority.

``There were a lot of things Nicole likes about Pacific,'' said her father, Wes. ``It's a quality institution. They call it the Ivy League Ivy League

Matson, who has canceled a planned recruiting visit to Ohio State, is among several key returning players for Valencia, which finished 29-4 and advanced to the second round of the Southern Section Div. I playoffs last year. Teammate Jordan Taylor, Valencia's star pitcher, has committed to Michigan.
