 MATRIXX MARKETING SELECTED TO PROVIDE
NATIONWIDE CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER FOR DIRECTV(TM)
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- DirecTv Inc., a subsidiary of Hughes Communications Inc., announced that it has executed a definitive agreement with MATRIXX Marketing Inc. to provide the national telephone marketing and customer-service center for its 150-channel DirecTv(TM) direct-to-home satellite television service. The value of the agreement was not disclosed.
MATRIXX Marketing, a subsidiary of Cincinnati Bell Inc., is the nation's largest independent telephone marketing services company. The Consumer Division of MATRIXX will provide inbound and outbound services including equipment dealer referrals, programming sign-up, and complete customer service and account management for DirecTv.
DirecTv will be the United States' first high-power direct-to- home satellite entertainment distribution system. Beginning in early 1994, a wide variety of movies, sports, entertainment and informational programming will be delivered to households equipped with a low-cost satellite receiving system. The home-receiving system, distributed under the RCA brand name at an initial retail cost of $700, will consist of an 18-inch satellite dish, decoder box and remote-control unit. DirecTv estimates that it will acquire approximately 10-million subscribers before the end of the decade.
The customer-service center for DirecTv will be located at a MATRIXX facility in Salt Lake City. By the end of the first year of operation, MATRIXX will be capable of providing up to 400 dedicated DirecTv customer-service representatives, providing complete customer service 24 hours per day, seven days per week. At peak operation, approximately 100,000 telephone calls can be processed per day.
DirecTv president Eddy Hartenstein welcomed the signing of the agreement. "The agreement with MATRIXX brings another excellent company into the DirecTv business infrastructure," Hartenstein said. "The emphasis MATRIXX places on maintaining high-quality employee performance standard ensures that DirecTv customers will receive prompt and courteous service whenever they call our toll-free number," he added.
"All of us at MATRIXX have been impressed with the comprehensive planning by the people at DirecTv and their selection of the highest quality resources to support these plans," said David J. Lahey, president of MATRIXX Marketing Inc. "We are very pleased to play a role in this exciting venture."
The DirecTv customer-service center will provide consumers with a variety of service, including programming and subscription information, customer registration and authorization, billing inquiry resolution and system-installation assistance. The agreement also provides for customer-service representatives with both English and Spanish language capability. The system will be available for operation in October 1993.
DirecTv programming will be carried on the United States' first high-power DBS satellites, currently under construction at Hughes Aircraft Co. The two satellites will carry programming services for DirecTv and United States Satellite Broadcasting Inc. (USSB). The first satellite is scheduled for launch in December 1993. When the system is in full operation at 101 degrees West longitude, more than 150 DirecTv programming services will be offered.
