LANCASTER - Desert High's Anthony Ford, Jason Payne and Bryan Gerlach only sweated a little bit over the math problems at the 20th annual Math Field Day Math Field Day is an individual mathematics competition ranging from grades 4-12 held in West Virginia. In 4th-9th grade, students compete within their own grade. In 10th, 11th, and 12th grades, students must compete within all of the grades mentioned.  at Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties. .

But in the end when the team awards were announced, Desert - Edwards Air Force Base's high school - had captured its seventh consecutive small-school junior-senior team title.

``I think it has a lot to do with the teaching (at the school) than the students,'' said Payne, who was part of Desert's winning team last year and who scored a perfect 800 on the math portion of the SAT II college entrance exam Noun 1. entrance exam - examination to determine a candidate's preparation for a course of studies

A total of 13 schools were represented in the annual competition.

Rosamond High School's team of James Decker, Jon Otero and Eric Patel finished second in the small school junior-senior division.

Burroughs' second-place large-school junior-senior team consisted of Thomas (language) Thomas - A language compatible with the language Dylan(TM). Thomas is NOT Dylan(TM).

Topping the list of individual competitors was Hart's Taylor, who scored a perfect 100 on his test.

The last perfect score on the test came in 1992.

Paraclete's Jungi Kim finished second in the individual competition with a score of 83.

``I thought that I could have done a lot better,'' said Kim, who also has scored a perfect 800 on the math portion of the SAT exam. ``Some of the questions were hard, and I was a little nervous, but I still could have done better.''

Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill High School's team of Nicholas Walton and Bryan Hoyte won the large school freshman-sophomore competition. Desert's team of Andrew Schaffrinna and Debbie Berg captured the small-school freshman-sophomore title.

In second place in the large-schools freshman-sophomore competition were Chris Hiszpanski and Henry Lin from Hart High School. Broc Mitchell and Kendra Titus of Rosamond finished second in the large-school freshman-sophomore competition. Antelope Valley College math professor Richard Sieger, who compiles the test, said the questions were much harder than last year's contest.

``The test gets reviewed ahead of time by all my colleagues, and the feedback that I got was that the test was very difficult,'' Sieger said. ``Some of my colleagues just flat out couldn't do the questions.''
