, it was a former Loyola player who did most of the damage.

Rafael Rice rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries as Loyola lost 28-10 in the first game for the reconfigured Serra League in front of more than 4,000 fans at East L.A. College.

``Whoever made us (nationally ranked) and gave us all the accolades was not looking with the right eyes,'' said Loyola coach Steve Grady, who didn't allow his players to be interviewed. ``They were better than us tonight. Anybody who thought we were favored, I don't understand. We got a long way to go.''

Loyola (5-1, 0-1) has lost six games in a row to Mater Dei since 1991, including three times in the playoffs and once in the championship. Mater Dei is one of three teams with a winning record against Loyola in at least five games played Games played (most often abbreviated as G or GP) is a statistic used in team sports to indicate the total number of games in which a player has participated (in any capacity); the statistic is generally applied irrespective of whatever portion of the game is contested. .

Rice, who entered the game averaging 77 rushing yards, carried the load beginning on the back-breaking second drive by Mater Dei. The Monarchs already led 7-0 and got the ball at midfield mid·field

. Rice carried six times for 47 yards, including an 11-yard run on fourth-and-1 from the 28.

Then he had the play of the game, a 13-yard run where he had five defenders pulling him from all sides yet pushed the group ahead 10 yards.

``After I left, they treated me like they didn't need me,'' said Rice, who started for Loyola as a sophomore two years ago. ``So I got a new family now. I know some of them still have hard feelings, but we all go our separate ways.''

Rice's former backup, Bo Renaud, entered the game leading area large schools in rushing but was held to 79 yards on 17 carries for Loyola.

Mater Dei (5-1, 1-0) sophomore quarterback Jason Porcier outplayed Loyola senior Adam Gonzalez. Gonzalez was removed from the game midway through the second quarter after completing 2 of 9 passes for 25 yards.

Scoft's first drive ended in a 49-yard field goal by Andrew Kearney in the final seconds of the first half.

But any doubt remaining ended when Scoft threw an interception under a hard rush in the final minute of the third quarter, giving Mater Dei the ball at the Loyola 25. Rice finished off the Cubs with a 12-yard sweep for a score to the left side.
