MATADORS DON'T LIKE VIEW PACIFIC'S LATE DEFENSE ENOUGH TO BEAT CSUN PACIFIC 66, CSUN 62.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

Davin White had the ball in his hands in the waning seconds and Cal State Northridge needed a 3-pointer to tie the game against Pacific. White faced nearly the same scenario last year with an NCAA Tournament NCAA Tournament can mean:

 berth on the line.

Only this time, he couldn't see much of the basket.

``I tried to find an opening but I went to the side where all the trees were,'' White said. ``I saw mostly black jerseys.''

White was referring to Pacific's contingent of big men, who didn't let him get a good look. His 3-point attempts with 14 and three seconds left missed and Pacific survived to win a Big West Conference game 66-62 over CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  in front of a standing-room only crowd of 1,712 at the Northridge Gym.

With the victory, the Tigers virtually have locked up the regular-season title and have a three-game lead over CSUN (9-9), which fell to 7-3 but maintains second place in conference.

The Matadors were so close to pulling out a victory. After White's miss with three seconds, Jasko Korajkic got the rebound and made one of two free throws for the four-point margin of victory.

possession, Calvin Chitwood fouled David Doubley, who made two free throws for a three-point lead. CSUN never tied the game or took the lead, even though Pacific made just three field goals in the final 12 minutes against CSUN's pressure defense.

Boylan had a game-high 17 points, six rebounds and six assists and Jonathan Heard added 13 points. Pacific's three seniors - Christian Maraker, Doubley and Guillaume Yango - all scored in double figures, with Maraker's 16 points a team-high.

CSUN was close, but couldn't get over the hump hump (hump) a rounded eminence.

. And White, who had 11 points, wasn't able to make the shot he missed last year in the last second of Pacific's 75-73 win in the Big West Tournament final.

``There may have been a little of that in his subconscious subconscious: see unconscious. ,'' Braswell said. ``It's one of those things he's had to live with for a long time. I don't fault him. He made big plays on the offensive end and big plays on the defensive end.

``But we could've had better shots (at the end). I wasn't pleased with those looks at all.''

The Tigers have size and athleticism and ran out to a 17-point lead at 36-19 with four minutes left in the first half. Still, CSUN outrebounded Pacific 36-33 and shot a season-high 68 percent in the first half. Pacific made four of five shots in an 8-0 run to pull ahead by 17. The Matadors put together a 12-3 run to end the first half but still trailed 39-31 at halftime.

CSUN pulled within 45-41 on two free throws by Boylan with 13:46 left.

The Matadors were thin at point guard since Bakari Altheimer broke his hand in practice on Tuesday and is likely out for the year.

Altheimer was out sick at the beginning of the week and Tuesday, he returned to practice for about 20 minutes before his ring finger collided with Jonathan Heard's knee.
