MASTERCARD TO ISSUE SILVER MEDALLIONS IN COMMEMORATION OF THE 1994 WORLD CUP

NEW YORK, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- For the first time in history, the world's most popular sporting event -- World Cup Soccer -- will be played in the United States. To commemorate this historic occasion, MasterCard International, an Official Sponsor of the 1994 World Cup, has issued an officially licensed World Cup silver medallion collection. The ceremonial first striking of the medallions takes place in Chicago on June 17, 1993 -- exactly one year before the first World Cup game will be played at Soldier Field in Chicago.
The collection, which will be minted by Chicagoland Processing Corp./Enviromint, consists of two limited edition pure silver medallions, one circular and one rectangular, which MasterCard will offer together in 5,000 matched numbered sets and individually in quantities of 20,000 each -- for a total worldwide mintage of 25,000 per medallion.
The circular medallion is 1.5 inches in diameter and contains one full troy ounce of .999 fine silver. The obverse of the medallion portrays a soccer player in an action shot, while the reverse depicts the official World Cup USA `94 logo.
The rectangular medallion measures 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" and contains three and one half ounces of .999 fine silver. The obverse portrays the flags of all previous World Cup host nations as well as the United States flag and the FIFA World Cup trophy. The reverse depicts a map of the United States and marks each of the nine host cities for the 1994 World Cup.
The collection, which will be available exclusively to MasterCard cardholders until October 15, 1993 by dialing 1-800-622-3121, will be offered together in matched numbered sets priced at $119.95 each. The circular medallion can be ordered separately for $29.95, as can the rectangular medallion, which will be offered at $79.95.
