MASSMUTUAL NAMES WENDLANDT CHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICER; FITZGERALD TO HEAD CORPORATE FINANCIAL OPERATIONS

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company has appointed Gary E. Wendlandt executive vice president and chief investment officer and Daniel J. Fitzgerald senior vice president in charge of corporate financial operations.
Both appointments represent a planned management succession program following the retirement of Richard G. Dooley, a 36-year veteran with the company, who served as MassMutual executive vice president and chief investment officer since 1978.
"The retirement of Dick Dooley marks a significant milestone for MassMutual," said MassMutual President and Chief Executive Officer Thomas B. Wheeler. "While one of the great leaders of our industry is moving on, our management succession provides for the emergence of two strong and capable individuals who will form the financial core of MassMutual's leadership team."
"Gary Wendlandt has demonstrated both investment acumen and financial management skill, having served as both the head of MassMutual's Securities Investment Division and as head of Corporate Financial Operations," said Wheeler. "Similarly, Dan Fitzgerald has demonstrated his abilities in a broad spectrum of roles at MassMutual. As part of our leadership team, these two individuals bring diverse skills that will serve our organization now and in the future."
As chief investment officer, Wendlandt, 42, is charged with overseeing MassMutual's overall investment activities including $26 billion in general investment account assets. In addition, he is president and trustee of MassMutual Corporate Investors (NYSE: MCI) and MassMutual Participation Investors (NYSE: MPV), a director of Oppenheimer Acquisition Corp., Concert Capital Management, Inc. and Merrill Lynch Derivative Products, Inc.
A graduate of Washington University, St. Louis, with a Bachelor's degree in applied mathematics and computer science, Wendlandt joined MassMutual in 1972 as an actuarial student. He became second vice president and actuary in the Investment Administration area in 1981. Wendlandt was named senior vice president and head of the Securities Investment Division in May 1983.
Wendlandt has served as head of MassMutual's Corporate Financial Operations since January 1992 and was named executive vice president in June 1992.
Fitzgerald, 45, takes over his new post as head of Corporate Financial Operations, having served since 1991 as senior vice president in charge of Financial Administration for the company's primary line of business, Insurance and Financial Management (IFM).
Fitzgerald brings a broad array of company experience to his new position. He joined MassMutual as an actuarial student in 1969, and has served in a variety of areas in IFM's financial services, product services, administration and new business/underwriting (which he headed) divisions. In addition, he also served in the company's group life and health insurance line in both the actuarial and product development areas.
Among the highlights of his career, he was named actuary in 1978, second vice president in 1980, vice president and IFM administration controller in 1986 and senior vice president in charge of the IFM New Business/Underwriting Division in 1990. Additionally, Fitzgerald has served as president and chief executive officer of both of the company's insurance subsidiaries: MML Bay State Life Insurance Co. and MML Pension Insurance Co.
A native of South Hadley, Mass., Fitzgerald received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Boston College and is a graduate of the New Hampshire Military Academy.
