MASS PRODUCTION CROWD REOPENS QUAKE-DAMAGED CHURCH.

Byline: Brent Hopkins Staff Writer

WOODLAND HILLS - Whether decked out in Sunday best or casually attired, parishioners turned out by the hundreds to witness the opening of St. Bernadine of Siena Catholic Church.

In what Cardinal Roger Mahoney termed ``a day of great rejoicing,'' nearly 900 worshippers gathered for the inaugural Mass on Sunday.

The new church stands in striking contrast to the temporary structure where the parish has worshipped for the past year.

``We're moving out of the 'canvas cathedral,' '' said Donna Forrester, indicating the now-vacant tent.

Forrester, 37, of West Hills served as one of the head ushers for the Mass, which filled the new church to its capacity.

This was the first use of the church, built to replace a Northridge Earthquake-damaged facility that had served the parish since 1964.

As worshippers filed in to take their seats, the response was overwhelming.

``It's magnificent,'' said Bob Allen

So many people turned out for the Mass that not all could be accommodated.

A crowd of roughly 40, unable to be seated inside, waited patiently outside to look on through the doors. The distance proved not to be a problem.

``It doesn't matter where you are, as long as God's presence is there,'' Forrester said.
